I was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina. As a child, I loved books. I was always reading new stories, whether it was about mermaids, vampires, or regular girls like me. One of my favorite hobbies was writing stories about characters and worlds that I made up in my own imagination. If I wasn’t reading or writing, then I was drawing or sewing — anything that kept my mind and hands busy. Even today, these are still my favorite things to do in my free time.

Growing up, I struggled a lot with my identity as a black girl. I went to a predominantly white school private school for most of my childhood, which negatively impacted my self image. As I got older, I began learning and reading about people like me, with experiences similar to my own. For a black girl who felt isolated, discovering narratives and stories about other black women by black women helped me to feel grounded in my identity. Currently, I intend on majoring in Anthropology and Africana Studies with a minor in Women’s Studies. My interest in these fields stems from my experiences as a child yearning to learn more about my own history.
